A 54-year-old man, who was convicted of raping his nine-year-old grandniece in 2022, is awaiting sentencing after a hearing in Suva was postponed to Friday. During the hearing, his lawyer, Tobia Ravuniwa from the Legal Aid Commission, requested additional time for preparation.
The man was originally charged with two counts of rape, but Justice Dane Tuiqereqere acquitted him of one count related to incidents alleged to have occurred between February 1 and 28, 2022. The victim, now 11 years old, reported that the assault occurred when the man allegedly grabbed her while she was getting her shoes, as well as on August 28 in a bedroom after she returned home from school.
Shaheen Bibi, representing the state in the proceedings, noted the importance of this case in highlighting the broader challenges of addressing sexual violence, especially within families. In a similar vein, there have been instances involving other relatives charged with offenses against minors, underscoring the critical need for continued advocacy and a strengthened judicial response.
As the case continues, the extended bail for the accused indicates a careful approach from the legal system, aiming to balance the rights of the accused with the necessity of safeguarding victims. This ongoing process provides hope that justice will eventually prevail and that victims will receive the support necessary to heal and reclaim their lives. The case is adjourned until March 21, allowing for further preparation by both the defense and the prosecution.
