Justice Delayed: A Mother’s Ongoing Fight for Accountability After Tragic Ferris Wheel Accident

The family of Komal Kumar continues to endure the emotional burden of her tragic death in a Ferris wheel accident nearly two years ago. Sunita Wati, Komal’s mother, has voiced profound heartache over the ongoing delay in accountability and the police’s failure to provide a comprehensive report to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The emotional toll of the incident has been exacerbated by the subsequent death of Ms. Wati’s husband, who succumbed to grief over the unresolved case.

Ms. Wati expressed her anguish, stating, “It’s so sad. It’s been nearly two years, and the police don’t have a proper report for the DPP on the incident.” She noted that despite the DPP’s confirmation of receiving the investigation file in September last year and returning it with recommendations, the police have yet to respond adequately. Frustration has mounted as her family waits for justice, reflecting a widespread concern over the handling of the case.

In previous articles regarding this incident, it has been highlighted that the Ferris wheel accident occurred during the Fiji Showcase event, injuring not just Komal but also two other individuals. There has been no accountability two years post-incident, with various authorities, including the police and the Employment Ministry, involved in the investigation, but no charges filed as of yet. The owner of the Ferris wheel company has reportedly left the country, complicating the situation further.

Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, acknowledged the family’s distress and committed to following up with the police to ascertain the progress of the investigation, showing some governmental engagement in the matter. In light of the tragedy, organizers of public events have begun excluding Ferris wheels to prioritize public safety, signaling a broader reassessment of safety standards in such attractions.

Ms. Wati perseveres with hope for justice for her daughter, emphasizing, “I don’t need money; I just want justice for my daughter. That’s it.” Her ongoing fight for accountability underscores the importance of ensuring that safety measures are strengthened and further tragedies are prevented.

This heartbreaking story reflects not just a quest for justice but also a community’s call for better safety regulations and accountability, ensuring such incidents are addressed earnestly to protect future generations. The family’s pain resonates with many, serving as a reminder of the real-life impacts of safety failures in public spaces.
