Acting Chief Justice and Chair of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), Salesi Temo, has labeled the US$1000 monthly superannuation payment received by suspended Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Christopher Pryde as “theft.” This statement came during the third day of Pryde’s tribunal hearing held at the Veiuto Court Complex.

The tribunal is examining two main allegations against Pryde: first, a photograph of him with former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum taken at a diplomatic event on February 28, 2023; and second, unauthorized payments of US$1000 per month, which reportedly have accumulated to over FJ$288,000 since 2012.

Justice Temo rejected media portrayals of the payments as over-compensation, asserting they should be seen as an outright theft. He explained that investigations conducted by the JSC found no evidence of authorization for these payments, which typically require consultation with the Attorney General’s office and the President’s approval—steps that were apparently not followed in this case. The payments were halted in July 2023 as investigations began. Temo emphasized that Pryde’s defense, which relied on contractual obligations, was inadequate to legitimize these transactions.

Regarding the controversial photograph with Sayed-Khaiyum, Justice Temo indicated that it was imprudent for Pryde to associate with someone involved in political conflict, asserting that even a photo can convey significant implications. He reminded that those in judicial positions have a duty to maintain neutrality, even in personal engagements.

Addressing Pryde’s concerns regarding financial challenges stemming from his suspended salary, Justice Temo dismissed these claims, pointing out the Constitution’s provisions for legal aid or the option for self-representation.

The tribunal proceedings will continue today, further examining the allegations against Pryde.

This case highlights the critical importance of ethical practices and governance within public office. Upholding integrity in public service ensures accountability and trust from the community, paving the way for a more transparent system.
