A family in Fiji is devastated after the tragic death of Serupepeli Butusomo, who lost his life in a hit-and-run incident in Qelewaqa, Labasa. The incident occurred early on Sunday morning, and his cousin, Masilina Ratawa, expressed her sorrow, stating, “He won’t be able to defend himself, but God is watching, and I know justice will be delivered.”
Ratawa shared memories of Mr. Butusomo, who was raised by her mother in Vatudova Village. He had dedicated his life to farming and had chosen not to marry or start a family. According to Ratawa, he left home on Saturday evening for a kava gathering with friends at Wailevu Village, promising to return the next day. However, she identified his body by his clothing when police asked her to go to the Labasa Hospital morgue. Visible injuries were apparent, indicating the severity of the incident.
The local police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, and search efforts for the driver involved are underway. Similar incidents have raised concerns in the community, highlighting the need for increased road safety awareness. Recently, another family in Naduna, Labasa, also sought answers following the death of 26-year-old Jovilisi Katonibau, who died under similar circumstances of a hit-and-run. This pattern of tragic accidents underscores the importance of community vigilance and cooperation to prevent such incidents.
The grief shared by both families reflects a deep pain that resonates through the community, but hope remains that justice will be served and that future tragedies can be avoided. As investigations continue, communities are reminded of the critical need for caution on the roadways to ensure the safety of all individuals.
