Acting Chief Justice Salesi Temo has criticized the suspended Director of Public Prosecutions, Christopher Pryde, for attempting to manipulate the court proceedings by stating he would not attend the tribunal hearing unless his salary was reinstated. Justice Temo deemed this tactic as ‘unfair’ and reiterated Pryde’s qualifications, noting that he is an accomplished lawyer capable of representing himself. If he cannot afford legal assistance, he can seek support through Legal Aid.

Further complicating matters, Justice Temo revealed that since 2012, Pryde has improperly paid himself over $288,000 in superannuation funds that he was not entitled to, as there was no formal approval from the Judicial Services Commission or the Attorney-General’s Office. Temo characterized this as a form of theft, asserting that public funds were misappropriated due to Pryde’s unauthorized actions.

When the tribunal inquired about the financial affairs of the DPP, Temo confirmed that Pryde was responsible for final financial approvals, emphasizing that there was no recorded approval for the disputed payments.

The tribunal is currently investigating allegations of misconduct and is likely to recommend the removal of Pryde from his position. In a notable incident, it was reported that Pryde had a prolonged meeting with Sayed-Khaiyum while an investigation was underway involving him, raising further concerns about potential improprieties.

The tribunal’s proceedings have been adjourned until 10 am tomorrow, where further developments may unfold.

This situation serves as a critical reminder of the importance of accountability in public office. It highlights the need for transparent governance and suggests that robust measures need to be in place to prevent such abuses of power in the future. The ongoing proceedings demonstrate the judicial system’s commitment to upholding the law and ensuring that those who are entrusted with public responsibilities act in the best interest of the community. Hopefully, this case will result in strengthened oversight in governmental financial practices.
