The Digicel Fiji Junior Kulas are set to face Tonga in their opening match of the Oceania Federation Confederation under-16 Women’s Championship at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva today.
Coach Marika Rodu has dedicated months to preparing the team for this major competition. Sunil Kumar, head of talent development for Fiji Football, expressed his confidence in the team, saying they are ready to take on some of the toughest opponents in the Pacific.
“The girls are fit, ready, and eager for the challenge that lies ahead; the team has worked hard to be in top form for the championship,” Kumar stated. He conveyed his best wishes to the players, emphasizing their potential to make history similar to the boys’ team, which became the first to qualify for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Qatar.
In a boost for the squad, three players from the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup will join the Junior Kulas next week. Goalkeeper Aliana Vakaloloma and forwards Asenaca Naio and Elesi Tabunase will enhance the team’s skills and experience. Additionally, defender Aleeza Raza, who plays in Australia, will be part of the lineup.
The Junior Kulas’ match is scheduled for 3 PM today. They will face the Cook Islands in their second group match on Wednesday, and their final pool match will be against Samoa on Saturday. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals.
