Juice Stand Chronicles: A Young Woman’s Journey of Hope and Resilience

In the busy bus stand of the capital, 20-year-old Asenaca Marama is ready to assist her next customer. Managing her grandfather’s juice stand, which has grown to symbolize hope for her family, Ms. Marama showcases her dedication and resilience. The revenue from the juice business provides essential support for her household.

A former student of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School and the fifth of six siblings, Ms. Marama embodies a strong work ethic. She recalls tough childhood moments when her father was the sole breadwinner, leading to struggles with food security. Despite these challenges, she remained determined and optimistic.

“My childhood was difficult,” she shared. “Sometimes there wasn’t food at home or for school lunches.” These hardships motivated Ms. Marama to develop into the determined individual she is today.

“I am hardworking, independent, funny, and a little bit crazy,” she stated. “Running the juice stand has taught me resilience—you must keep pushing through despite life’s difficulties.”

Her 70-year-old grandfather serves as her source of inspiration, often encouraging her to deepen her relationship with God. “When I hear hurtful comments from others, I pray for them,” she said.

Despite her youth, Ms. Marama sees her role as a source of comfort for those having a rough day. “I offer juice to customers who are feeling down,” she explained. “It helps them unwind and sometimes leads to meaningful conversations.”

She works six days a week and enjoys hobbies such as dancing, singing, and playing volleyball and netball. Currently, she is learning the guitar and expresses deep gratitude for the support of her family and friends.

“If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be who I am today,” she said, emphasizing the importance of community during challenging times.

Ms. Marama encourages other young people to maintain hope and positivity, reminding them that their problems are temporary.
