At the busy bus stand in the capital, compassionate Asenaca Marama waits patiently to assist her next customer. The 20-year-old from Kadavu manages her grandfather’s juice stall, which has become a crucial source of income for her family. The earnings from selling juice help provide meals and meet their essential needs.

A former student of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School and the fifth of six siblings, Marama has always embodied a strong work ethic. Despite facing challenging situations, she maintains her positivity and strives to excel.

“Growing up was tough,” she shared. “My father was the sole breadwinner, and we often struggled. There were times when we had no food at home or for school lunches.”

These challenges, however, did not discourage her; instead, they inspired her to build resilience. “I consider myself hardworking, independent, humorous, and a bit quirky,” she said. “Running the juice stand has taught me that even amid hardships, one must persevere.”

Marama often receives guidance from her grandfather, who is a constant source of inspiration. “He encourages me to attend church and to deepen my relationship with God, advising me to trust Him completely,” she noted. “Whenever I encounter negativity, I pray for those who hurt me.”

Although young, Marama sees herself as a source of comfort for those having a tough day. “I offer juice to customers who might be feeling down. It helps them relax and often leads to meaningful conversations.”

She works six days a week and enjoys activities like dancing, singing, and playing volleyball and netball during her leisure time. Currently, she is learning to play the guitar.

Marama expresses deep gratitude to her parents and grandfather for their unwavering support. “Without them, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. I’m also thankful to my friends for standing by me during difficult times.”

She advises young individuals to maintain a positive outlook and to never lose hope, reminding them that challenges are temporary.
