At a busy bus stand in the capital city, Asenaca Marama, a compassionate 20-year-old from Kadavu, is ready to assist her next customer. She runs her 70-year-old grandfather’s juice stand with determination and hard work.
For Ms. Marama, the juice stand goes beyond just a place of business; it has become a vital source of hope and sustenance for her family. The income from selling juice helps provide meals and supports her family’s overall needs.
A graduate of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School and the fifth of six siblings, Ms. Marama has always demonstrated a strong work ethic. Even during challenging times, she manages to smile and puts in her best effort.
“Life was tough when I was a child,” she shared. “My father was the only one working in the family, and we struggled. Sometimes, we had no food at home, and other times we lacked lunch for school.”
These hardships did not deter her spirit; instead, they motivated her to become the resilient young woman she is today. “I consider myself hardworking, independent, funny, and a bit crazy,” she said. “The juice vending business has taught me that despite life’s challenges, one must continue to persevere.”
Her grandfather plays a significant role in her life, often offering guidance and motivation. “He encourages me to attend church and build a relationship with God, urging me to trust Him completely,” she said. “Whenever I encounter negativity, I pray for those who hurt me.”
Despite her youth and inexperience, Ms. Marama strives to be a source of support for those having a tough day. “I offer juice to customers who are feeling down,” she explained. “It helps them unwind and sometimes leads to meaningful conversations.”
Ms. Marama works six days a week and enjoys dancing, singing, and playing volleyball and netball in her free time. Currently, she is also learning to play the guitar.
She expresses deep gratitude towards her parents and grandfather for their unwavering support. “Without them, I wouldn’t be who I am today. I’m also thankful to my friends for standing by me during my most difficult moments.”
Her advice to young individuals is to maintain a positive perspective and never lose hope, as the challenges faced in life “do not last forever.”
