President Wiliame Katonivere emphasized the importance of reflection during his tenure as Head of State while speaking at the Judicial Officers Workshop in Nadi over the weekend. He noted that his three years in office have provided him with firsthand insight into the developments within the Judiciary sector.

Katonivere considered it a privilege to address the participants, highlighting the significance of discussing advancements within their field and fostering professional connections. He remarked on the Judiciary’s crucial role as an arm of the government, stressing the necessity of periodically reviewing both accomplishments and challenges.

“Reflection allows us to critically assess the decisions and actions we have taken, giving us the opportunity to reinforce our way forward,” he stated. He underscored the need for decisions to be grounded in insight and intention, as these elements are vital in serving communities and the nation.

Addressing the judicial officers, he emphasized their responsibility as guardians of the rule of law and the public trust, a heavy burden inherent in their profession. He urged them to be guided by integrity and dignity in their roles.

Katonivere reminded the officers that the principles of impartiality, fairness, and efficiency are foundational to a democratic society. He reiterated the Judiciary’s Vision Statement, which aims to maintain an independent and impartial judicial system and highlighted the importance of accountability in fulfilling this commitment.

He encouraged the participants to be vigilant in their decision-making processes, ensuring transparency and adherence to the rule of law to preserve the integrity of the justice system. Furthermore, he urged them to strengthen collaborations with international partners and regional stakeholders to enhance their resources and expertise.

“Engaging with your partners can refine your best practices as you work towards an efficient judicial system,” he said. He encouraged the judiciary professionals to learn from one another, share experiences, and implement lessons learned with the integrity that defines their profession.
