His Excellency, President Wiliame Katonivere, emphasized the significance of reflection during his tenure as Head of State while addressing participants at the Judicial Officers Workshop held in Nadi over the weekend. He noted that throughout his three years in office, he has observed key developments within the Judiciary sector.

“It is indeed a privilege to speak to you as you gather to share advancements within your field and to strengthen your professional connections for the future,” the President stated. He highlighted that as a crucial branch of government, the Judiciary must periodically assess its journey, considering both accomplishments and obstacles.

“Reflection enables us to critically evaluate our decisions and actions, allowing us to solidify our path forward,” he continued. “This practice ensures that the decisions we make are informed by insight and strong intent, as we continue our service to the community and the nation.”

Additionally, the President pointed out that this gathering is an ideal time for Judicial Officers to contemplate their roles as defenders of the rule of law. “As Judicial Officers, you carry the significant responsibility of being stewards of public trust, an inherent aspect of your profession.”

He stressed that their work should be governed by principles of integrity and dignity, asserting, “In a profession built on the law, it is your duty to uphold the rule of law and ensure justice is accessible to all citizens.” He reminded the officers that impartiality, fairness, and efficiency are crucial to maintaining a democratic society.

Reiterating the Judiciary’s Vision Statement, which focuses on preserving an independent and impartial judicial system, he underscored the importance of accountability in that commitment. “I encourage you, as officers of the judiciary, to be mindful of your assessments and ensure they promote transparent decision-making.”

The President noted that maintaining checks and balances is vital to uphold the rule of law and to protect the integrity of a fair judicial system. He also urged judicial officers to enhance collaboration with international partners and regional stakeholders.

“By utilizing available resources, including expertise, advancements in online management, research, and ongoing training, you can improve your standards as individuals and as an organization,” he stated. He encouraged the judiciary professionals to engage with partners to refine their best practices and to support each other’s learning, sharing valuable lessons while upholding the esteemed integrity of their profession.
