The Acting Chief Justice and Chairperson of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), Salesi Temo, has labeled the suspended Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Christopher Pryde’s monthly superannuation payment of US$1,000 as “theft.” This statement came during the third day of Pryde’s tribunal hearing at the Veiuto Court Complex.

The tribunal is investigating two main allegations against Pryde: a photograph with former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum during a diplomatic event on February 28, 2023, and unauthorized superannuation payments that have reportedly accumulated to over FJ$288,000 since 2012. Justice Temo refuted claims from the media that described these payments as mere over-compensation, asserting that there was no record of authorization for the payments.

Temo explained that all such payments should involve consultation with the Attorney-General’s office and require the President’s approval, none of which took place in this instance. The payments were halted in July 2023 as investigations began, with Temo stating that Pryde’s contractual arguments did not provide adequate justification for the transactions.

Addressing the controversial photograph with Sayed-Khaiyum, Justice Temo cautioned Pryde, stating that being photographed with someone facing political issues was unwise, as appearances could lead to misinterpretations. He emphasized the ethical obligation of neutrality for judicial and public officeholders, regardless of whether they are performing their official duties or engaging in personal activities.

When Pryde expressed concerns about financial difficulties due to his salary being suspended, Justice Temo dismissed these claims, citing the option for legal aid or self-representation as stipulated by the Constitution.

The tribunal proceedings are set to continue today.

This ongoing situation underscores the importance of accountability and transparency in government positions, aiming for a calibrated balance between public service and ethical responsibility. The outcome of this tribunal could serve as a strong reminder of the expectations placed upon those in positions of authority to uphold the law and maintain integrity.
