Two individuals facing murder charges in connection with the death of a Fiji-born Canadian national, Narend Chand, have had their judgment postponed to February 6, 2025. Salimoni Lagicere and Edward Nand were expected to receive their verdict, but Suva Judge Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo Bull decided to adjourn the case.
The allegations state that Chand was lured under the pretext of meeting a woman he had met online. Unfortunately, the profile of the woman was reportedly fake and created by one of the accused. After making arrangements to meet and rob Chand, the two allegedly accompanied him upon his arrival in Fiji. Tragically, Chand’s body was later discovered floating in the Waimaro River near Waito Settlement in Tailevu.
The charges are being prosecuted by the Director of Public Prosecutions, with the state represented by lawyer Zenith Zunaid. Lagicere is defended by lawyer Loqi Cati while Nand is represented by lawyer Sunil Gosai.
This case highlights the ongoing challenges that law enforcement faces in dealing with crimes fueled by deception and technology, reminding us all to be cautious in our online interactions. The adjournment of the judgment provides an opportunity for the legal process to unfold thoroughly, ensuring that justice is served according to the legal standards.
While the situation is tragic, it serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in personal safety and awareness when meeting individuals from online platforms. The focus now shifts to the legal proceedings ahead, with the hope that this case will reach a just resolution.
