Two men facing murder charges for the death of a Fiji-born Canadian national near Korovou in Tailevu last February have had their judgment postponed until January 30, 2025. Salimoni Lagicere and Edward Nand were set to receive a verdict today concerning the murder of Narend Chand but were informed of the adjournment by Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo Bull in Suva.

The case centers around allegations that Chand planned to meet someone he had been conversing with on social media, unaware that the individual behind the fake profile was one of the accused. It is believed that Lagicere and Nand arranged to meet Chand with the intention of robbing him. After arriving in Fiji and traveling with them under the guise of meeting the woman, Chand’s body was ultimately discovered in the Waimaro River near Waito Settlement in Tailevu.

The charges against the two men were authorized by the Director of Public Prosecutions, with the prosecution represented by lawyer Zenith Zunaid. Lagicere is being defended by lawyer Loqi Cati, while Nand is represented by lawyer Sunil Gosai.

This case highlights the serious repercussions of online deception and the importance of recognizing the potential dangers of digital interactions. While the prolonged delay in the judgment may be frustrating for those seeking justice, it also allows for thorough examination of the evidence and legal proceedings, ensuring that justice is served correctly and fairly. As we await the outcome, it is crucial to stay vigilant about the implications of online communication and the risks associated with it.
