In March, a significant aspiration came to fruition for a Fijian of Indian descent living in Fiji—visiting India. This opportunity arose through the 74th Know India Programme organized by the Indian High Commission in Fiji.
Over the course of nearly three weeks, the participant embarked on an enriching journey, residing at the Hyatt Hotel in Delhi alongside a diverse group of 40 individuals from nine different countries. This trip provided a deep dive into India’s rich heritage and vibrant culture.
The adventure kicked off in Delhi, where the blend of modernity and tradition welcomed the group. The Hyatt Hotel served as a luxurious base for exploring the city’s historical and cultural landmarks.
A standout moment of the journey was the visit to the Taj Mahal in Agra, regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful structures and a symbol of love. The stunning white marble façade and intricate carvings left a lasting impression, showcasing timeless beauty.
Another highlight was the visit to the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, which offered an insightful view into the nation’s military training. The guided tours provided a glimpse into the academy’s history and its significance in shaping India’s armed forces.
Exploring Delhi’s famous historical sites was also a key part of the trip. The Red Fort, with its monumental architecture, echoed the grandeur of the Mughal era, while the Old Fort (Purana Qila) revealed layers of history through its ancient walls.
India Gate served as a solemn tribute to Indian soldiers from World War I, while Raj Ghat, the memorial for Mahatma Gandhi, offered a humbling experience with its simple yet powerful design.
The Rashtra Bhawan (Rashtrapati Bhavan) showcased India’s administrative heart, allowing the group to appreciate the impressive architecture and expansive gardens that define the presidential residence.
The Bharat Mandapam, a new convention center, highlighted India’s modern advancements, while the Prime Minister’s Museum provided insights into the country’s political history with engaging exhibits.
Evenings were filled with vibrant experiences, exploring Delhi’s night markets, where the group immersed themselves in the local culture through handicrafts, textiles, and street food.
Throughout the journey, the camaraderie among participants enhanced the experience, fostering a sense of global unity through shared stories and celebrations of diversity.
Returning to Fiji, the participant brought home not just souvenirs but a deep appreciation for India’s cultural richness and historical significance. The Know India Programme turned out to be a celebration of heritage and a bridge to the Indian diaspora’s roots.
