In March of this year, a long-held aspiration became a reality for a Fijian of Indian descent living in Fiji. The opportunity to visit India arose through the 74th Know India Programme, organized by the Indian High Commission in Fiji.
Over nearly three weeks, the traveler experienced an extraordinary adventure while staying at the Hyatt Hotel in Delhi, alongside a diverse group of 40 participants from nine countries. This journey was not simply a trip; it was an enriching experience delving into India’s vibrant culture and rich heritage.
The adventure commenced in Delhi, a city that harmonizes modernity with tradition. The Hyatt served as a luxurious base for exploring the city’s many historical and significant attractions.
A standout moment of the trip was visiting the Taj Mahal in Agra, renowned as one of the world’s most beautiful monuments and a magnificent symbol of love and architectural excellence. The striking white marble exterior and intricate carvings captivated everyone, while the reflection in the surrounding pool was breathtaking. The visit to the Taj Mahal was a reminder of the enduring beauty that transcends time.
Another significant highlight was the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, which provides training for future leaders of the Indian Army. This prestigious institution offered valuable insights into India’s military heritage through guided tours and interactions with cadets, leaving a lasting impression of pride and discipline.
Explorations continued in Delhi, with visits to notable historical sites such as the Red Fort and the Old Fort (Purana Qila), where the grandeur of Mughal architecture and layers of history unfolded. India Gate, a memorial for Indian soldiers who lost their lives in World War I, served as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made for the nation, while the peaceful gardens nearby offered a respite from the urban hustle.
A visit to Raj Ghat, dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, evoked deep emotions. The simplicity of the memorial, with its black marble platform, honored Gandhi’s enduring legacy and was a humbling opportunity to pay respects at the site of his cremation.
The Rashtra Bhawan (Rashtrapati Bhavan), India’s presidential residence, was another memorable stop. Its grand architecture and vast gardens provided insight into the nation’s democratic framework. The Bharat Mandapam, a newly opened convention center, highlighted India’s modernity and commitment to hosting international events.
One of the trip’s engaging highlights was visiting the Prime Minister’s Museum, which showcased India’s political history through personal memorabilia, photographs, and interactive displays that brought the stories of India’s leaders to life.
Evenings were filled with vibrant experiences, including exploring Delhi’s night markets, which dazzled the senses with an array of sights, sounds, and smells. The bustling bazaars offered a rich assortment of handicrafts and traditional artifacts, while sampling local street food fostered a deeper understanding of Delhi’s dynamic culture.
The journey also fostered camaraderie among participants from various countries, creating a sense of global unity through shared stories and celebrations of diverse backgrounds.
Returning to Fiji, the traveler brought back not only souvenirs and photographs but also a deep appreciation for India’s cultural richness and historical significance. The Know India Programme transcended mere travel; it celebrated heritage, explored tradition, and forged connections between the Indian diaspora and their roots.
