Former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua announced that he will undergo elbow surgery this month, which is expected to keep him out of the ring for six to eight weeks. This decision comes in the wake of his recent knockout defeat to Daniel Dubois in September, a match that marked a significant setback in Joshua’s career.

Speaking to DAZN during the super middleweight title bout between Canelo Alvarez and William Scull in Riyadh, Joshua stated, “I’m trying to get my body right.” The former boxing superstar has faced challenges since losing his heavyweight titles to Oleksandr Usyk in 2021, with his most recent fight against Dubois resulting in his second stoppage loss as a professional.

Joshua previously enjoyed a four-fight winning streak before facing Dubois—a match that did not go his way, ending in a fifth-round knockout which robbed him of the IBF world heavyweight title. This loss adds to the pressure for Joshua as he considers a potential rematch with Dubois.

Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, is optimistic about a rematch, noting that it’s a “given” that Joshua will exercise his rematch clause once he’s recovered. Hearn acknowledges the increased confidence of Dubois, who is seen as a formidable opponent after his recent victory.

Dubois also expressed ambition post-fight, indicating his desire to take on other top contenders, including a potential match against Oleksandr Usyk. He interpreted his victory over Joshua as not only significant for his own career but as a step toward greater challenges within the heavyweight division.

As Joshua embarks on his recovery, there is hope for his return to the ring. With continued dedication and resilience, he aims to reclaim his status among boxing’s elite, and fans will be watching closely for his next move.
