A sentence review for Jone Vakarisi has been adjourned to April 20 and will be heard before Chief Justice Salesi Temo, the latest development in the case that was due to be heard in Suva today.

The matter, originally listed for hearing today, is a review of the sentence imposed by the Suva Magistrates Court earlier this year after Vakarisi pleaded guilty to one count each of unlawful possession of illicit drugs and damaging property for offending committed in 2023. The lower court imposed an aggregate term of three months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years.

Court records show Vakarisi was given time to consider the state’s written submission and prepare a reply before the review proceeds. He remains out on bail while the higher court considers whether the earlier sentence should be varied or upheld. No reasons for today’s adjournment were provided in open court.

A sentence review is a legal process by which a higher court examines whether the punishment imposed by a lower court was appropriate in law and sentencing principle. The outcome could see the original suspended sentence confirmed, increased, reduced or otherwise varied, depending on the arguments the parties put before Chief Justice Temo on April 20.

Vakarisi’s convictions stem from offences recorded in 2023; at his plea hearing he admitted the two charges. The suspended three-month term handed down by the Suva Magistrates Court means he will not serve that custodial term unless he breaches the conditions of the suspension within the two-year period, pending the result of the review.

This hearing comes amid continued public attention to court processes and sentencing in Suva. While unrelated high-profile prosecutions and sentencing decisions have drawn scrutiny elsewhere, the Vakarisi review will focus narrowly on whether the originally imposed suspension and aggregate term were appropriate in all the circumstances. The case will return to the High Court registry for mention as it approaches the April 20 date.
