John Rabuku Addresses Calls for Resignation and Plans for Exiting Office

Acting Director of Public Prosecutions, John Rabuku, has accused the Attorney General and the President of the Fiji Law Society of attempting to usurp the Judicial Services Commission’s role by publicly calling for his resignation. Rabuku emphasized that the Commission is well aware of its responsibilities and has already determined the way forward after two meetings this week.

Rabuku insisted that there is a process in place that must be followed to ensure the Office of the DPP continues to operate effectively during his transition. He stressed the importance of a smooth exit for the benefit of the staff and the institution.

When questioned about any communication from the Cabinet or the Commission regarding his potential resignation, Rabuku clarified that the Cabinet does not and will not communicate with him on this matter as it is outside their purview. He confirmed that arrangements for his departure have already been discussed with the Commission, and the timing will be formally announced by them.

Rabuku acknowledged the Supreme Court’s recent opinion but noted that it is not an order for him to vacate his office immediately. He emphasized the relevance of adhering to the judicial process established by the Commission.

He urged lawyers to thoroughly read and understand the Supreme Court’s opinion and highlighted the importance of senior lawyers recognizing their roles within the justice system.
