John Manenti Takes the Helm: San Diego Legion’s New Era Begins

Australia Men’s Sevens Head Coach John Manenti has been designated as the new Head Coach of Major League Rugby (MLR) team, the San Diego Legion, with his official start date set for September 1, 2024.

Manenti brings extensive experience and a proven record of success in both Sevens and Fifteens rugby. He played a crucial role in significant achievements, including guiding Australia to its first-ever Sevens World Series win in 2022 and obtaining automatic qualification for the Olympic Rugby Sevens in 2023.

His coaching background encompasses both men’s and women’s teams, where he has successfully recruited, developed, and retained talent, leading teams to high-level performances consistently.

Ryan Patterson, the Team Owner of San Diego Legion, expressed excitement over Manenti’s appointment, stating, “During the Head Coach selection process, John stood out among a highly skilled group of candidates. His strategic vision for rugby and his ability to enhance teams and cultivate winning cultures left a strong impression on us. We are delighted to bring someone of his caliber to San Diego Legion and trust in his expertise and commitment to guide our team toward new achievements.”

David Haigh, the CEO of San Diego Legion, also shared his thoughts, saying, “John’s hiring demonstrates our dedication to excellence. His vast experience and impressive history of developing players and achieving success on the international level will be key as we strive to strengthen our footprint in Major League Rugby and beyond. We are optimistic that John will elevate the San Diego Legion to new levels.”

Manenti conveyed his enthusiasm about stepping into this new role, stating, “Returning to Fifteens rugby as the Head Coach of San Diego Legion presents an exciting chance to implement my coaching philosophy and insights in a fresh setting. I am determined to build on the solid foundation already established and guide the team toward our goal of securing the MLR Championship.” He plans to relocate to San Diego and is keen to start collaborating with the team in preparation for the upcoming season.
