The Australia CommBank Joeys football team recently took a break from their international tour to engage with the local community during a visit to Lovu Settlement in Lautoka. On Thursday, the squad, led by captain Miles Milliner, spent time at a local school, interacting with children and enjoying a friendly game of football, fostering a warm connection between the players and the community.

For many players, this was their first experience in Fiji, making the visit particularly significant. Milliner expressed the importance of such interactions, stating, “It was really special to get the opportunity to visit a local school and connect with the community.” He emphasized that exposure to new cultures broadens their perspective and appreciation for their own lives back in Australia.

The visit not only brought joy to the children but also allowed the players to reflect on the diversity of life around the world. Milliner noted, “In a way, it made the boys appreciate what we have back home. You see the diversity in how people live, and it really puts things into perspective.”

Connecting with local children emerged as a highlight of the day, with Milliner sharing that motivating the youngsters and instilling hope for the future of football was something meaningful for the team. “If we can motivate them and give them a bit of hope to keep playing football in the future, then that’s something really meaningful for us,” he stated.

The experience was well-received by the entire squad, with Milliner expressing enthusiasm for similar community engagements in future tours. “I think all the boys really enjoyed it. It’s definitely something we’d love to do again,” he remarked.

This visit exemplifies the positive impact of sports teams engaging with communities, highlighting the shared experiences and bonds that transcend borders. The Joeys’ commitment to making a difference reinforces the idea that sports can unite and inspire people, fostering hope and connection.
