Joeli Veitayaki Remembered: A Fijian Rugby Legend’s Lasting Legacy

The life and legacy of renowned former Flying Fijian rugby player Joeli Veitayaki were celebrated during a heartfelt memorial service in Nausori, attended by family, friends, and former teammates. Veitayaki, who passed away at the age of 58 in New Zealand on October 21, was remembered for his significant contributions to rugby and the community.

The memorial held at the Nausori Methodist Church featured eulogies that encompassed tributes from various groups, including his brother Sepesa Vueti, the Nuku Rugby Club, the St Marist Rugby Club, the Police Rugby Club, the Suva Rugby Union, the Fiji Rugby Union, and his daughter Marilyn Nawalowalo, who spoke on behalf of his children. The emotional atmosphere was complemented by tributes highlighting the legacy and impact of Veitayaki’s life on and off the field.

Paula Biu, representing Suva Rugby, and Sale Sorovaki, operations manager for the Fiji Rugby Union, shared their reflections on Veitayaki’s journey, detailing how he had become an inspiring figure both as an athlete and as a community member. Following the service, attendees were invited to a lunch at the Vunivivi Government Quarters Church Hall.

This memorial emphasizes the strong bonds within the rugby community, reminiscent of the recent tributes paid to other Fijian rugby icons like Josaia Raisuqe and Ilaitia Tuisese, both of whom were honored for their own contributions and legacies. The outpouring of grief throughout the Fijian sports community following Veitayaki’s passing is a testament to the unity and camaraderie shared among rugby players and fans alike.

Veitayaki, a prominent figure in Fijian rugby, donned the national jersey from 1994 to 2003, earning 49 caps and leaving an enduring mark on the sport. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations, as the rugby fraternity remains committed to celebrating those who have made a lasting impact on the game and society.
