The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Alumni Fund has made a significant contribution to disaster awareness in Fiji by donating 10,000 disaster preparedness posters for schools. This initiative aims to enhance the understanding of natural hazards among students and is particularly crucial given Fiji’s vulnerability to disasters such as floods, fires, landslides, tsunamis, and earthquakes.
During a handover ceremony, Education Minister Aseri Radrodro expressed his gratitude to JICA for their valuable support. He emphasized that educating students about safe responses to disasters is essential in a country that faces a high risk of natural calamities. The posters will be disseminated across various educational institutions, including those in rural, maritime, and urban regions, ensuring widespread access to vital information.
Radrodro additionally highlighted that this initiative will bolster not only students’ knowledge but also assist teachers, parents, and local communities in fostering a culture of preparedness and resilience within Fiji’s education system. By promoting awareness and preparedness, these efforts serve to strengthen the overall capacity of the nation to respond effectively to disasters in the future. This proactive approach reflects a commitment to safeguarding the well-being of students and communities throughout Fiji.
