Former All Blacks hooker Hika Elliot is about to be reunited with one of his most cherished possessions, bringing a heartwarming conclusion to a distressing ordeal. Earlier this year, upon his return from playing in France, Elliot discovered that his storage unit in Hawke’s Bay had been broken into, resulting in the theft of a box containing his treasured jerseys.
In total, around a dozen jerseys were stolen, including those from the Māori All Blacks, New Zealand under 21s, New Zealand under 19s, and significant representative teams such as the Hurricanes, the 2005 NPC final-winning jersey from Hawke’s Bay, as well as jerseys from Ireland, England, the Wallabies, and the Chiefs from their 2017 match against the British and Irish Lions. The loss was deeply upsetting for Elliot, who recognized that the sentimental value attached to these jerseys could not be quantified.
Determined to recover the stolen items, Elliot reached out to the community for assistance. He was contacted by several collectors, including one who informed him that his under 16 jersey from 2000 was being circulated on Facebook Marketplace. Despite efforts to reclaim it, Elliot received no response from the seller.
Enter Dylan Booth, a collector from New Zealand now living on the Gold Coast. Booth had noticed the jersey and was eager to help Elliot reclaim it. He regularly scours online platforms for vintage jerseys and memorabilia to restore them and return them to their rightful owners. After recognizing the jersey as Elliot’s, he encountered challenges as the seller became unresponsive.
However, Booth’s luck changed during an unexpected outing. While exploring a vintage market, he stumbled upon the very jersey Elliot was searching for. Without hesitation, he purchased it for $120, believing it was a worthy investment given its significance to Elliot.
Upon hearing the news, Elliot expressed immense gratitude, likening the moment to an early Christmas gift. The return of the jersey has sparked renewed hope for Elliot, who is optimistic about locating the remaining stolen jerseys, especially for the sake of his children.
This story illustrates the power of community support and determination in reclaiming lost treasures. It reminds us that even in times of loss, there are individuals willing to step in and assist, ultimately leading to heartwarming reunions.
With resilience and camaraderie, Elliot and Booth have shown that while material items can be lost, the bonds created through shared passions and experiences remain enduring. As Elliot continues his quest to recover the remaining jerseys, there is hope on the horizon that each one will find its way back home.
