Gareth Baber, the National Program Manager for 7s Rugby, has revealed that a captain for the men’s 7s national team has not been chosen yet. Baber hinted that Jerry Tuwai, a seasoned player, might take up the role. The team, which includes Tuwai, left for the Paris Olympic Games 2024 in France.
Baber praised Tuwai’s strong leadership skills within the team, and his ability to inspire motivation in others as well as himself. Nevertheless, Baber also emphasized that the ideal team would comprise three or four captains.
During their two-week stay in France before moving into the games village, Baber hopes for individuals to demonstrate their leadership capacities. The decision for captaincy will be left to Osea Kolinisau and Setefano Cakau to decide who they believe would be the best to lead the team on the field.
At present, there are no arrangements for scrimmaging sessions. The focus is on individual performance, and Baber stressed the importance of quality training. A 15-player team has been brought in to combat the potential of injuries which are common in 7s games.
