Former Tonga and Australia rugby league player Michael Jennings delivered an impressive performance during the Pacific Bowl Championship match over the weekend, netting a hat-trick as the Fiji Bati triumphed over the Cook Islands with a commanding 56-6 victory on home turf.
The match featured a total of 10 tries from the Bati, highlighting the team’s dominant display throughout the game. After the match, Jennings reflected on his achievement, expressing his joy not only at personal success but also for the collective win, and he extended well wishes to the Cook Islands for their upcoming match.
“It’s great to score a hat-trick and secure the win here in Fiji. We’re hopeful the Cook Islands can win next week against Papua New Guinea to help us progress,” Jennings stated. He expressed gratitude for being able to conclude the game with such a performance in front of the Fijian audience.
Looking towards the future, Jennings sees a promising outlook for the Fiji Bati as they prepare for the World Cup. “The future looks bright for the Fiji Bati. We’re still in the process of building this team with the World Cup in sight. The enthusiastic crowd and participation from young players signal a positive development,” he remarked.
Jennings highlighted the strong faith and teamwork within the group, noting that unity and belief are essential components for success. “Faith plays a major role for us. I am moved by the faith these players have, which sets this experience apart from my previous teams in Australia and Tonga. I am thankful to represent my country.”
He also praised his teammates, including Viliame Kikau and Tui Kamikamica, for proudly embodying Fiji’s spirit on the field. Jennings emphasized the necessity of nurturing more talent to compete with Tier One nations in rugby league effectively.
By serving as role models for aspiring players, Jennings and his teammates aim to bolster the sport’s growth in Fiji and continue drawing talented individuals to the national squad. The Fiji Bati will now await the outcome of the match between the PNG Kumuls and Cook Islands this week to learn their next steps in the 2024 Pacific Championships.
