Jekope Maiono’s Inspiring Academic Journey from Fiji to New Zealand

A Fijian man, Jekope Maiono, has made headlines after achieving impressive academic success at the University of Otago in New Zealand. At 45 years old, Jekope is a native of Cikobia and works as a lecturer at the university. He moved to New Zealand in 2006 to pursue his passion for sports.

Jekope was a member of the Rewa team and Tailevu Knights, where he gained valuable experience that eventually led him to further his education in New Zealand. Currently, he is considering returning to the university to continue his studies, as the institution is in close proximity to his current location.

He has devoted 13 years to completing several significant academic qualifications, including a Bachelor of Commerce in Management, a Master of Sustainable Business, a Postgraduate Certificate in Health Sciences, and a Doctor of Philosophy focused on sustainable land development in Fiji.

In 2020, he began his PhD program, conducting research titled “50 years of Independence Indigenous Perception on Sustainable Land Development in Fiji.” This study aims to provide insights into how the local indigenous community views land utilization and its development over the past 50 years of independence.

Jekope advocates for a deeper understanding of land use and ecological practices, stressing the importance of engaging with communities to capture their perspectives on land management. He highlights the intricate relationship between local ecology and political dynamics in land use.

Currently, he continues to work as a lecturer at the University of Otago Business School, contributing to discussions on indigenous issues and promoting awareness of the challenges faced by indigenous peoples in relation to land use.

Jekope encourages local communities to share their visions for the next 50 years, emphasizing the significance of land preservation and responsible use in ensuring sustainable development for future generations.
