A 24-year-old farmer has received a life sentence for the murder of his uncle, driven by jealousy and personal grievances. The verdict was delivered by Justice Lee James Burney at the Labasa High Court, where Betero Komai was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 14 years and 9 months before he may be eligible for pardon.
The tragic incident occurred on November 8, 2025, when Komai confronted his uncle at his residence in Eritobeta Settlement on Rabi Island. In a violent altercation, Komai initially knocked his uncle down with a stone, subsequently attacking him multiple times with a cane knife while the uncle was seated in his kitchen, accompanied by two of his grandchildren.
The ferocity of the attack left the victim with severe injuries, including a severed left ear and substantial lacerations to his head, neck, and limbs. Following the attack, Komai fled into the bush, discarding the weapon, which was later recovered by law enforcement officials.
During a police interview, Komai disclosed that he had questioned his sister about a supposed affair with their uncle. When his sister confirmed this, he armoured himself with a knife and a stone and went to confront the uncle. Justice Burney emphasized that Komai’s attack was motivated by a mix of jealousy and a perceived need to protect his sister from her uncle, stating that he was “crazy over her.”
Additionally, the court took note of Komai’s concerning history of violence, including a prior conviction for a life-threatening assault on a young cousin, which underscored the overall danger he poses to the community.
This case serves as a somber reminder of the tragic consequences that can arise from familial jealousy and unresolved issues, leading to acts of violence that not only devastate families but also disrupt the wider community. It is hoped that this ruling and the circumstances surrounding it will prompt discussions on mental health support and conflict resolution within familial relationships, fostering a more compassionate society.
