A lawyer representing rapper Jay-Z has requested the dismissal of a lawsuit claiming he and fellow artist Sean “Diddy” Combs raped a 13-year-old girl in 2000. The plaintiff, known by the pseudonym Jane Doe, alleges that she was drugged and assaulted at a party following the MTV Video Music Awards. However, inconsistencies have arisen in her accusations, including statements about interactions with celebrities who were not present at the time.
The case becomes more complex as her father expressed doubts about his recollection of events, specifically regarding a supposed five-hour drive to retrieve her after the alleged incident. While Doe acknowledged that she made “some mistakes” in her accusations, she remains firm in her belief that the attack occurred. Experts in the field of sexual assault recognize that it’s common for victims to misremember details, especially after trauma or drugging.
This lawsuit is part of a larger context of sexual assault claims against Combs, who is currently in custody and awaiting trial on separate federal sex-trafficking charges. Both Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, and Combs deny all allegations against them. Jay-Z’s attorney criticized the lawsuit as lacking proper vetting and suggested it was motivated by personal gain.
The lawsuit claims that Doe was given a drink at the party that made her feel “woozy,” leading her to lie down in a room, where she alleges the assault occurred. However, photos from the evening indicate that both Jay-Z and Combs were at a different location during the time the alleged assault took place. Additionally, statements from other individuals present at the party, including the Madden brothers, further challenge the credibility of Doe’s account.
Despite the doubts raised, Doe’s lawyer has stated that they are committed to substantiating her claims and that she is even willing to undergo a polygraph test, a rare move that demonstrates her conviction. The woman, now 38 and a mother, expressed a desire to empower others who may have faced similar circumstances to come forward.
Erinn Robinson from the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) explained that trauma can affect memory recall, leading to fragmented and inconsistent memories that should not invalidate a victim’s claims.
