Sixteen-year-old Jasvil Rokoro is putting in the hard work this New Year’s Eve at the Albert Park grounds, dedicating her time to prepare for the upcoming U19 national cricket trials. While many of her peers are enjoying their school holidays, Rokoro, hailing from a cricketing family in Bemana-Navosa, has been focused on honing her skills on the field.
Starting her journey as a water girl for her parents’ cricket club, it wasn’t long before she found herself playing in matches, quickly rising to prominence within Fiji’s cricketing community. Rokoro has already made her mark, representing Fiji in both the senior women’s team and the U19 squad.
Reflecting on her experiences, she mentioned, “In 2024, I went to Bali as part of the U19 Fiji team, and then earlier this year I joined the senior women’s team. We traveled to New Caledonia and hosted another tournament in Fiji.” This exposure has helped her grow as an athlete and gain invaluable experience.
As she gears up for the national trials, Rokoro has set several objectives as a senior player within the U19 team. “My goal is to learn as much as I can so that I can inspire my team. I will also look to them to help me and show me where I can improve as a player,” she stated, showcasing her commitment to teamwork and personal development.
Despite cricket being a lesser-followed sport in Fiji, Rokoro remains hopeful about her future in the sport. With aspirations to become a professional cricketer and secure an overseas contract, she embodies the passion and determination that could pave the way for her dreams. Her journey serves as an inspiration for young athletes in Fiji, illustrating that dedication and hard work can lead to extraordinary opportunities.
