Jasper Williams Primary School made their debut at the Lautoka Primary Schools Rugby Festival yesterday. Thirteen-year-old Mereani Botitu shared that the team was thrilled and overwhelmed with excitement when they learned they would be participating in the two-day festival.
“We have always been part of the GIR program but never competed before. This year, we were very happy to hear that we would participate in this two-day festival,” said Botitu. “All the girls prepared well and were looking forward to this day, praying for good weather,” she added.
When discussing their focus in rugby, Botitu mentioned that their primary goal is to develop their rugby talents and secure overseas contracts. “Our focus is to become good rugby players, don the Fiji jersey, and play overseas,” she concluded alongside her teammates.
The festival marks a significant milestone for Jasper Williams Primary School, providing the girls with a platform to showcase their skills and passion for rugby. The school’s participation highlights their dedication and hard work, as well as the growing opportunities for young female athletes in Fiji.
LPSRA president Rusiate Cinavilakeba commented on the importance of such events in promoting grassroots rugby. “It’s encouraging to see schools like Jasper Williams Primary participating in the festival. This event is not just about competition but about development, instilling values, and providing opportunities for young talents to grow,” Cinavilakeba said.
