Former rugby league star Jarryd Hayne is officially making his comeback to the sport after a seven-year break, set to play for the Wentworthville Magpies in the Ron Massey Cup. Scheduled to take the field against the Bulldogs this Sunday at Ringrose Park, Hayne’s return has been highly anticipated by fans and supporters alike.
The Wentworthville Magpies expressed their excitement on social media, celebrating Hayne’s return by encouraging fans to come out and support the team. He will play in the five-eighth position, a role he previously held while representing Fiji in the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.
At 37, Hayne’s journey back to rugby league has not been easy, as he has been recovering from a hamstring injury that initially delayed his start with the Magpies this season. He has been actively training with his teammates, putting in two to three nights a week to prepare for his return.
Hayne, a two-time Dally M Medal winner and former Grand Finalist for the Parramatta Eels, has faced significant personal challenges, including serving nearly two years in prison for a sexual assault conviction, which has since been overturned by the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal. Throughout his career, he has amassed an impressive record, scoring 121 tries in 214 NRL games and making impactful contributions for both Australia and Fiji in international play.
This revival in Hayne’s career not only reflects his passion for rugby league but also speaks to the concept of second chances, offering hope for redemption and a positive influence in the sport. As he steps onto the field once again, his presence is poised to inspire both his teammates and aspiring players looking to follow in his footsteps.
