Jarryd Hayne’s Potential Rugby League Comeback: What’s Next?

Former NRL player Jarryd Hayne could be poised for a remarkable return to rugby league, as Fiji’s national team coach Wise Kativerata has initiated talks regarding Hayne’s involvement in this year’s Pacific Championships.

Having last played in a competitive match in 2018, Hayne’s possible comeback is stirring significant interest. Kativerata has made it clear that the door is open for the 36-year-old to reenter the professional rugby league scene.

“The door is open for him if he wants to join,” Kativerata stated. “He is fit, but we are just awaiting his decision. His participation would be a boost for the team.”

Hayne was released from prison in June after his conviction was quashed on appeal. Since then, he has been training with sprinting coach Roger Fabri, who is helping him prepare for a potential return to professional athletics.

“Jarryd is an elite athlete,” Fabri remarked. “He is someone who cannot be overlooked when he sets his sights on something.”

However, the decision for Hayne to join the Fijian team may be fraught with difficulties, particularly as he does not currently hold an NRL contract. He would need to secure approval from the ARL Commission to compete in the Pacific Championships.

Hayne has experience representing Fiji as well as Australia at the international level and played Rugby Sevens for Fiji in 2016, making him a valuable asset for the national team.
