The Japanese government has significantly bolstered Fiji’s healthcare system with a generous donation valued at around $10 million, which includes vital medical equipment, hospital beds, and ambulances. This contribution, aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery within the country, was officially handed over by Japanese Ambassador Rokuichiro Michii to Fiji’s Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, on Wednesday at the Fiji Pharmaceutical Biomedical Services Centre in Suva.
Among the extensive equipment provided are a CT scanner installed at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, eight infant incubators, 50 hospital beds, six ambulances, and various other essential medical devices. Some of these resources have already been dispatched to healthcare facilities where they are urgently needed, enhancing the country’s medical capabilities.
Dr. Lalabalavu expressed gratitude for the timely donation, stating, “It will greatly assist healthcare workers around the country in their work and make a difference for patients in our care.” The donation falls under Japan’s Economic Social Development Programme (ESDP), which forms a part of its efforts to support Fiji particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ambassador Michii highlighted the long-standing friendship between Japan and Fiji, emphasizing Japan’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure in Fiji to support socio-economic development. Since 2016, Japan has facilitated eight ESDP projects worth a total of $60.72 million, showcasing the ongoing partnership and dedication to enhancing healthcare services in Fiji.
This collaborative effort not only signifies immediate support for Fiji’s healthcare sector but also symbolizes a hopeful trajectory for the future. With continuous international assistance, Fiji is expected to strengthen its healthcare delivery, promoting better health outcomes across the nation.
As Fiji navigates its health service challenges, this donation reinforces the importance of international cooperation in ensuring accessible and quality healthcare for all Fijians, fostering optimism for a healthier future.
