Japanese Investors Set Their Sights on Fiji’s Aviation Sector

Japanese investors are now looking to aviation infrastructure as their next potential area for investment in Fiji’s energy sector. This interest comes as around twelve new businesses backed by Japanese capital are set to launch operations in Fiji, supported by five foreign investors.

The initiative, which has received endorsement from the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, reflects a growing commercial confidence in Fiji and the broader Pacific region. This development follows Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s earlier support for Japan amidst concerns over the Fukushima waste disposal issue last year.

Komiyama Yasuji, the director general for trade policy and economic cooperation at Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, noted the benefits of this investment, particularly in terms of developing Fiji’s human resources. He emphasized that Japanese firms are actively engaging with local communities, sharing knowledge, and fostering skills development.

“We welcome more Japanese businesses to establish themselves here,” Komiyama stated, adding that there is an increase in startups addressing social issues prevalent in Japan, which encourages young entrepreneurs to explore opportunities abroad.

He highlighted that among the targeted investment areas is green transformation, specifically hydrogen and various energy technologies, which hold significant promise given the challenges posed by climate change in the region.

This shift in focus marks a departure from traditional investment interests that primarily included airports, energy, and other infrastructure projects. Komiyama indicated that Japanese companies are eager to expand their presence overseas, with renewed interest in the Pacific. The manufacturing sector remains strong in Japan, and there is potential for Japanese businesses to develop operations in Fiji.

“The key factor is the availability of skilled human resources. The country determines the types of manufacturing it needs, and we are open to providing assistance,” he added.

Fiji Airports did not respond to inquiries regarding the matter before the publication of this article.
