Kalabu Primary School and Nasinu Gospel School have been awarded a grant of $381,870 from the Japanese Government to enhance Early Childhood Education (ECE) facilities along with other improvements. This funding comes through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) program.
The Japanese Ambassador to Fiji, Rokuichiro Michii, will be present for the official handover of the newly constructed facilities today, as announced in a statement from the Japanese Embassy.
The necessity for this funding arises from a significant rise in student enrollment at Kalabu Primary School, which has outpaced the existing infrastructure. The grant will facilitate the construction of a new ablution block and a kindergarten classroom, complete with furniture. This initiative will also alleviate congestion issues at Nasinu Gospel Primary School, improving the educational environment for students.
According to the release, “The GGP Program is part of the overall Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) implemented by the Embassy of Japan to empower the people at the grassroots level.” The GGP Program has been actively implemented in Fiji since 1990, funding projects in diverse sectors including education, water supply, health, and transportation. To date, 423 projects have been funded through this program, amounting to approximately $32 million (FJ$72.8 million).
This investment showcases Japan’s ongoing commitment to supporting educational development and improving the quality of life in Fiji. Such initiatives not only enhance the infrastructure but foster a nurturing learning environment, paving the way for a brighter future for the children in these communities.
In summary, this funding not only addresses immediate educational needs but also strengthens the overall educational framework in Fiji, reflecting a proactive approach to grassroots development.
