The governments of Japan and Fiji have officially formalized a significant grant valued at 313 million Japanese Yen, approximately FJ$4.6 million, aimed at bolstering Fiji’s health services through the acquisition of essential medical equipment. This agreement, signed in Suva on February 19, 2026, is part of Japan’s Economic Social Development Program (ESDP) and will be executed in collaboration with Fiji’s Ministry of Health and Medical Services.
During the Exchange of Notes and Grant Agreement ceremony, Japan’s Ambassador to Fiji, Hiroshi Tajima, emphasized that the funding reflects Japan’s unwavering commitment to the Lomavata–Kizuna Partnership, which was established between Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and Japan’s Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae in November of the previous year.
Ambassador Tajima also mentioned that the Japan International Cooperation Agency will provide further technical guidance on the implementation of this grant. He highlighted the ongoing and forthcoming initiatives under this partnership, including a grant contract signed on January 23, in which Japan and Project HEAVEN Trust committed to delivering a specialized four-wheel-drive Mobile Audiovisual Examination vehicle. This vehicle, equipped with soundproofing and screening tools, aims to enhance hearing and vision services across Fiji.
Moreover, Japan is poised to collaborate with UNICEF on a new initiative, with a four-year agreement valued at US$5.48 million set to be signed on March 3. This agreement focuses on strengthening preventive measures against drug use among children and adolescents, addressing Fiji’s pressing national drug emergency.
Fiji’s Minister for Health and Medical Services, Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, described the grant as a crucial investment in the future health workforce of the country, as well as a means to enhance access to healthcare. He explained that the funding will facilitate the procurement of high-quality medical equipment, including teaching tools for nursing students at the Fiji National University. Additionally, it will support the establishment of a mobile clinic and a mobile dental truck aimed at improving outreach services.
This collaborative effort highlights the ongoing commitment of both nations to improve healthcare accessibility and infrastructure within Fiji, paving the way for a healthier future for its citizens.
