The Government of Japan has further solidified its partnership with Fiji by donating a Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) to the Republic of Fiji Navy (RFN) as part of Japan’s Official Security Assistance (OSA) Program. This initiative aims to bolster maritime security across the Pacific region.
The handover ceremony took place earlier today, marking a significant step in Japan’s continuous effort to enhance Fiji’s maritime capabilities. Earlier this year, the RFN received an underwater camera and a rescue boat as part of this ongoing project, with three inshore patrol crafts expected to arrive in the following year.
Commodore (CFN) Humphrey Tawake Natuva, Commander of the Fiji Navy, accepted the donation on behalf of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF). He expressed heartfelt gratitude to His Excellency Rokuichiro Michii, Japan’s Ambassador to Fiji, for Japan’s unwavering support of Fiji’s defense and security sectors.
“This timely donation is critical as the Fiji Navy works to enhance its presence in the maritime domain and extend its operational reach,” said Commodore Natuva, while emphasizing appreciation for Japan’s ongoing partnership in ensuring Fiji’s maritime security.
The RHIB is slated for deployment within the Navy’s Small Boats Squadron, where it will assist naval personnel in maritime law enforcement duties and search and rescue operations in nearshore areas.
Ambassador Michii reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to reinforcing Fiji’s maritime domain awareness (MDA) and operational capacity, which aligns with a shared vision for a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific.” He stated, “The Government of Japan remains committed to strengthening Fiji’s maritime security capabilities, ensuring peace and stability across our shared ocean region.”
The ceremony was attended by officials from the Ministry of Defence and National Security, representatives from the RFMF, and members of the Japanese Embassy, including training staff who will aid in integrating the RHIB into Fiji’s naval operations.
This donation reflects Japan’s growing role as a key partner in advancing regional security, showcasing the strength of bilateral ties that aim to combat common maritime challenges, particularly in light of issues like climate change and natural disasters. Such collaborative efforts illustrate a hopeful future for both nations as they work together toward enhanced safety and resilience in the face of evolving threats in the Pacific.
