Beyond the headline

Yusuke Ishiguro, an expert in the J-PRISM3 program, is currently based in Suva, Fiji, where he is assisting in Japan’s long-standing partnership with the island nation in addressing solid waste management. The J-PRISM3 initiative, which spans from 2023 to 2028, is the third phase of a regional project spearheaded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), aimed at promoting the 3Rs—Reduce, Reuse, Recycle—as well as the concept of “Return,” which focuses on channeling valuable recyclable materials back to manufacturing countries.

The program specifically addresses the unique challenges faced by Pacific Island nations, such as Fiji, where limited land and geographic isolation complicate effective waste management strategies. Ishiguro’s key responsibilities include spearheading composting initiatives and the Clean School Program (CSP), an educational program that was temporarily halted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Composting is particularly important as organic waste represents a significant portion of Fiji’s waste. Transforming organic waste into compost not only aids in reducing landfill pressure but also supports the circular economy.

Recently, on February 17, a workshop focused on the Clean School Program was conducted, facilitating shared understanding and mutual learning among council officials. Fiji contends with complex waste management challenges, comparable to those Japan faced over four decades ago. Ishiguro emphasizes that a healthy environment is foundational to sustaining both society and the economy.

Through the lens of this perspective, he envisions the J-PRISM3 initiative as part of a long-term strategy to enhance Fiji’s waste management frameworks. He underscores the importance of collaborative efforts, community involvement, and data-driven practices as critical components for enacting sustainable change. Ishiguro’s commitment to addressing these waste issues is not only a testament to his expertise but also to the hope for a cleaner and more sustainable future for Fiji.
