Japan and Palau Boost Special Partnership as Pacific Stability Takes Center Stage

Japan and Palau have reiterated their strong commitment to partnership and regional stability during a recent Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. This meeting took place between Japan’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Motegi Toshimitsu, and Palau’s Minister of State, Gustav Aitaro, marking Aitaro’s second visit to Japan this year. Minister Motegi warmly described the two nations as “geographically, historically, and strategically important partners,” emphasizing their special relationship, known as tokubetsu.

During their discussions, Minister Motegi highlighted the critical role both countries play in maintaining a free and open international order rooted in the rule of law amid a complex regional security environment. He reaffirmed Japan’s dedication to collaborating with Palau to realize a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) and acknowledged key areas of cooperation, such as cybersecurity, tourism, and infrastructure development through submarine cables.

A significant topic discussed was the launch of regular direct flights between Narita, Japan, and Palau, commencing on October 29. Motegi expressed hope that these flights would enhance Japanese tourism to Palau, strengthening economic ties further. He also expressed gratitude to Palau for its involvement in the recovery of Japanese war remains, including those repatriated from the mass burial site on Angaur Island.

Looking towards the future, Minister Motegi indicated that Japan is eager to collaborate closely with Palau as it takes on the chairmanship of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) next year. He voiced his intention to deepen the bond of trust, or kizuna, between Japan and Palau, as well as with other Pacific Island nations.

Minister Aitaro reciprocated by thanking the Japanese government and people for their ongoing support and expressed his commitment to further developing the special relationship between the two countries. As both ministers exchanged views on regional affairs, their discussions illuminated a shared vision for stability and cooperation in the Pacific, showcasing a hopeful outlook for fruitful collaborations ahead.

This partnership not only reflects mutual respect and understanding but also underlines the importance of collective efforts in addressing regional challenges, promoting prosperity, and maintaining peace in the Pacific region.
