Janet Mason, the senior legal counsel for the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), has addressed allegations questioning her legal standing and professional conduct in New Zealand. In response to claims of facing disciplinary penalties, Mason categorically denied any issues related to her legal practice, stating, “I practice in New Zealand. I have a valid practising certificate.”

Mason, who is also admitted to the Fiji Bar, clarified that her role in the FICAC inquiry does not necessitate a Fiji practising certificate according to the Commission of Inquiry Act, although she obtained one voluntarily following a review by the Legal Practitioners Unit (LPU).

She acknowledged an ongoing appeal concerning a disciplinary matter in New Zealand but stressed that it should not reflect on her integrity or efficacy as a lawyer. Mason noted, “Even if the appeal doesn’t go in my favour, it doesn’t mean I lack integrity or am a bad lawyer.”

Furthermore, Mason dismissed allegations made by Stanley Simpson regarding failing to disclose critical information, labeling those claims as “nonsense and a lie.”

The ongoing controversy intensified when the Fiji Law Society sought her removal from the inquiry. Mason criticized their approach, calling their allegations “disgraceful” and suggesting they should raise their concerns with the LPU instead of pursuing baseless claims in court.

Despite these challenges, Mason reiterated her commitment to the integrity of the FICAC inquiry and her professionalism. She emphasized her successful legal practice, which comprises eight solicitors working under her.
