Jake Lloyd, best known for his role as young Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, has opened up about his long-standing mental health struggles, including a diagnosis of schizophrenia, which influenced his decision to step back from Hollywood not long after the film’s release.

In a recent conversation with Clayton Sandell, co-author of Star Wars: Timelines, Lloyd shared that he is feeling “pretty good” after completing an 18-month stay in an inpatient mental health facility in Southern California. Currently, he resides at a new rehabilitation center where he continues to receive treatment while enjoying more freedom in his daily life.

Reflecting on his journey, Lloyd remarked, “[I feel] pretty good, considering these 20 years of time that have come to an end.” He expressed acceptance in continuing his treatment, including medication and therapy, and emphasized the support he has received from those around him.

His mother, Lisa Lloyd, previously noted that part of Jake’s challenge involved overcoming anosognosia, a neurological condition that can make patients unaware of their symptoms. “I don’t have the time for feeling volatile,” Jake explained, recognizing the importance of his medication as a stabilizing force in his life.

Lloyd mentioned that while reaching “rock bottom” was painful, it ultimately was essential for him to engage wholeheartedly in both his treatment and with his diagnosis. Since becoming a well-known figure at just 8 years old, following his appearance in the Star Wars prequel, he has stepped back from public life, including conventions, but shares that the franchise and its fanbase will always hold a special place for him. He describes the interactions with fans as “therapeutic,” expressing gratitude for the support he has received over the years.

Looking ahead, Lloyd shared an optimistic sentiment, stating he is excited to celebrate May the Fourth, the iconic Star Wars day, with his mom. Before his iconic role in Star Wars, he appeared in films such as Jingle All the Way and had appearances on TV shows like ER and The Pretender.

This article highlights a hopeful journey of recovery and resilience, emphasizing that support from family and fans can play a significant role in overcoming challenges. There’s a positive light in Lloyd’s story as he navigates his path toward mental wellness and reconnects with the legacy of his childhood role.
