On November 27, the residents of Veinuqa in the Wainilotulevu village of Namosi received a much-needed financial boost for the improvement of their community hall. This support came during talks with Maciu Nalumisa, the Minister for Provincial Development, who facilitated a significant contribution of over $33,000 from the government of China to assist with the project.
The community hall, which has stood for over 20 years, faces issues such as wear and tear due to changing weather conditions, compromising its integrity. Peceli Marua, the village headman, expressed optimism, noting that although the community hall is undergoing renovations, additional help is necessary to ensure comprehensive upgrades.
The visit of Zhou Jian, a representative from the Chinese Embassy in Fiji, highlighted the dedication to further supporting the community’s efforts in enhancing their facilities. Jian remarked on the beautiful surroundings and emphasized the long-standing friendship between China and Fiji, which dates back nearly 49 years.
According to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, the support from China plays a crucial role in tackling poverty and strengthening the relationship between both nations. He highlighted that the support extended to Wainilotulevu reflects broader cooperation between the communities of China and Fiji.
Minister Nalumisa stated the urgency for Wainilotulevu to construct a proper facility that can shelter residents during adverse weather, demonstrating a commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the village’s residents. The chief of the province, Apenisa Naiyalatabua, expressed profound gratitude for the assistance received, indicating transformations within the village which they hope will continue.
