Saheed Ahmad Khan, a 72-year-old resident of Korociri, recently benefited from life-saving coronary stent treatment at Lautoka Hospital, a procedure he could not have afforded without the introduction of advanced Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) technology in the region.
Doctors identified a significant 70 percent blockage in Mr. Khan’s coronary arteries, initially suggesting that he might need to travel to New Zealand for urgent care. Fortunately, the newly established Cardiac Catheterisation (CATH) Lab at Aspen Medical-managed Lautoka Hospital made it possible for him to receive this critical treatment locally, allowing him to return home within 24 hours post-surgery.
Led by consultant cardiologist Dr. Bharatvansh Bali, the surgical team utilized a tiny camera inside the blood vessel to ensure accurate stent placement, marking a notable advancement in interventional cardiology in Fiji. Mr. Khan expressed immense gratitude, stating, “It is like a blessing for the people because otherwise, they could not afford it.” He emphasized the dire situation many patients might face without access to such local healthcare options, potentially jeopardizing their lives due to financial constraints.
Now recuperating at home, Mr. Khan commended the hospital staff for their professionalism and efficiency. His family, including several medical professionals, shared their relief and satisfaction with the successful outcome of the procedure.
This case underscores the increasing ability of local hospitals to provide advanced cardiac care, effectively reducing the dependence on expensive overseas treatments while delivering essential life-saving interventions to patients throughout Fiji. The introduction of such innovative technology not only enhances healthcare accessibility but also brings hope to many individuals who might otherwise be unable to afford critical medical procedures.
