The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is conducting its Oceania regional conservation forum in Suva this week, in collaboration with the Fijian Government. The event aims to gather, exchange, and celebrate successful conservation initiatives while also charting a path for future efforts.
Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica expressed Fiji’s pride in hosting the forum, stating that it provides a platform to discuss critical issues affecting Pacific communities.
Dr. Grethel Aguilar, IUCN’s Director General, emphasized the organization’s commitment to advocating for ecosystem protection and biodiversity conservation. She stated, “IUCN is proud to be amongst the strongest advocates for the protection of ecosystems and biodiversity conservation, through the promotion of world-leading science and deep traditional knowledge of Indigenous peoples, all amplified through the collective voice of our Members.”
Dr. Aguilar noted that the Pacific region is the largest for IUCN in terms of geography. The Fijian Government aims to enhance its effectiveness in conserving natural resources and protecting biodiversity through this forum.
DPM Kamikamica highlighted Fiji’s ongoing commitment to promoting environmentally sustainable development, noting that while there are many innovative local solutions, accessing consistent and timely financial resources remains a significant challenge. He remarked, “This is a common challenge across most Pacific Island countries largely due to our small administrations and the complexities of financial mechanisms in place.”
The forum will conclude on Thursday.
