The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) has forcefully dismissed allegations circulating on social media regarding the mismanagement of landowner funds, questionable lease approvals, and irregularities in staff appointments and retirement benefits. The Board characterized these claims as baseless, reckless, and devoid of supportive evidence, asserting that such accusations aim to mislead landowners and the general public about TLTB’s operations.

The TLTB emphasized that all lease agreements, including those with foreign entities like the Grace Road group of companies, are processed strictly in line with established policies, legal requirements, and thorough consultations with landowners. Ratu Aca Rayawa, Chair of the Governance, Audit and Risk Committee, highlighted that the iTaukei Land Trust Act mandates landowner consultation prior to lease issuance and specifies that approval may require signatures from at least 51 percent of landowning units.

Rayawa pointed out that leases are granted only after applicants fulfill all regulatory and financial conditions, including payment of premiums and rental obligations. The Board also refuted allegations suggesting that TLTB obstructed landowner projects to favor Grace Road leases, clarifying that the development lease for Yadua land was sold by a landowning trust to Grace Road Trading Limited, which continued its projects even after the original lease expired.

In Wainadova, the Board addressed breaches, applied penalties, and issued a new industrial lease in accordance with regulations. This matter is currently under judicial review in the High Court, where TLTB has committed to allowing the legal process to unfold.

On the subject of staff recruitment, Rayawa denied any claims of impropriety, asserting that all hiring decisions were made based on merit and subjected to thorough due diligence and statutory oversight. Moreover, he refuted assertions of corruption regarding retirement benefits, stating that all payments were processed in accordance with Board policy and procedure.

Rayawa reiterated that TLTB remains dedicated to governance and accountability while fulfilling its statutory responsibilities to empower landowners through various initiatives, including policy reforms, joint ventures, financial support, scholarships, and rural services. The Board has made notable strides in strengthening income collection, reducing arrears, and enhancing financial reporting to align with international standards.

TLTB expressed its unwavering commitment to safeguarding iTaukei land and collaborating with landowners to ensure it remains a source of pride, opportunity, and security for future generations. This proactive stance illustrates the Board’s determination to foster transparency and accountability in its operations, reinforcing a positive outlook for the community it serves.
