The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) has recently ramped up enforcement measures against tenants who have failed to settle their rent obligations, starting with the disconnection of water and electricity services for 35 individuals in arrears. TLTB’s CEO, Solomone Nata, disclosed that as of late February 2025, there are 248 rent default cases pending in court, along with an additional 163 awaiting writs of summons. In an exceptionally serious step, eight tenants have already received eviction notices due to non-compliance.
Nata underscored TLTB’s determination to recover outstanding rents, stating that the organization is actively working with tenants to establish manageable payment plans. This initiative serves as a last opportunity for those in financial distress to address their debts before further legal repercussions are imposed. He emphasized that landowners are entitled to fair compensation for their properties.
This initiative aligns with TLTB’s broader efforts, as it was previously reported that around 25,444 tenants had breached their lease agreements, resulting in total arrears exceeding $28.1 million by the end of February. Despite the strict enforcement actions, TLTB is focusing on maintaining open lines of communication with tenants who may be facing financial hardships. This constructive dialogue aims to forge solutions that not only support tenants but also ensure the interests of landowners are respected.
As developments occur, TLTB is encouraging all tenants with overdue payments to take action to avoid potential eviction or service disconnections. The organization’s message is one of hope, promoting a collaborative approach that aspires to provide both tenants and landowners with a resolution that fosters community stability and economic well-being. With timely communication and compliance, TLTB believes that a positive outcome is attainable for all parties involved.
