It: Welcome to Derry Teases a 1962 Racism-Tainted Tragedy

The HBO prequel series “It: Welcome to Derry” delves into a harrowing event that predates the terrifying saga of Pennywise from Stephen King’s expansive novel “It.” Within the vivid retelling, decades before the notorious clown preys on the Loser’s Club, a tragic incident unfolds featuring the Maine Legion of White Decency, a white supremacist organization. This group infamously set ablaze the Black Spot, a military speakeasy that served as a haven for Black patrons, leading to a catastrophic fire that resulted in numerous casualties, with many patrons trapped inside.

For executive producers Andy and Barbara Muschietti, who were instrumental in the adaptation of the original films into this new series, this catastrophic event serves as the cornerstone of the show’s first season. They chose to expand upon this horrific moment, transforming it into a crucial narrative element that confronts the deep-seated hatred of the 1962 era. The Muschiettis aim to unravel the motivations behind the tragedy and highlight the fates of key characters who did not survive the inferno.

Andy Muschietti, who directed a pivotal scene in the seventh episode, expressed the intent behind the sequence, saying, “It is one of the few big climatic moments of the arc of the show — it all builds towards that.” He emphasized the meticulous planning that went into creating a deeply immersive experience, allowing viewers to feel the raw horror faced by the characters trapped within the Black Spot. By keeping the camera within the confines of this dire setting for an extended period, the series intends to evoke a genuine sense of fear and empathy for those caught in such a tragic moment.

Through this focus on historical horror combined with supernatural elements, “It: Welcome to Derry” not only aims to entertain but also to provoke thought on the underlying issues of racism and violence, thereby reverberating with contemporary societal concerns while enriching the lore surrounding Stephen King’s iconic narrative.
