The government has been called upon to take care of Fijians residing in the most remote islands. Semi Koroilavesau, an Opposition Member of Parliament and former Minister for Fisheries, highlighted that many communities on isolated islands rely heavily on the resources generated by the government.
Koroilavesau pointed out specific areas such as Yanuca, situated between Rabi and Taveuni, and Ono-i-Lau, which includes Vatoa in the southeastern region, stating that there is a lack of available resources in these locations. He remarked that the agricultural potential is severely limited, as there is insufficient land for cultivation, and the forestry sector offers little, with only bushes and rocky terrain. He noted that the presence of birds dropping seeds is almost the only way any sandalwood might grow on these islands.
He urged the government to allocate resources and support to assist the Minister for Fisheries in aiding these isolated communities. Koroilavesau emphasized that the islanders largely depend on the sea for their income, as it remains their primary source of revenue.
