Isolated Islands Face Resource Struggles: Urgent Call to Action

The government has been called upon to support Fijians living on the most remote islands. Opposition MP and former Fisheries Minister Semi Koroilavesau highlighted that many communities on these isolated islands rely heavily on resources generated by the government.

Mr. Koroilavesau specifically mentioned islands such as Yanuca, located between Rabi and Taveuni, and Ono-i-Lau, which features areas like Vatoa. He pointed out the stark lack of resources on these islands, stating, “There is nothing there.”

When discussing agricultural opportunities, he noted the challenges with land cultivation, saying, “If you look at agriculture, they do not even have land to cultivate.” He also addressed forestry, mentioning that trees cannot grow on rocky terrain, which leads to a scarcity of viable agricultural options. He suggested that if birds were to drop sandalwood seeds among the rocks, there may be a chance to cultivate sandalwood.

Mr. Koroilavesau appealed to the government for increased resources and support for the Minister for Fisheries to aid these isolated communities. He emphasized that these islanders are left with minimal resources, primarily relying on the sea for their livelihoods.
